Why packaging producers need EPDs

Packaging EPDs are increasingly required by large retailers (Walmart, Target) and brand owners as part of Scope 3 emissions reporting.

Buy Clean compliance

California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and the Federal GSA now require EPDs for public procurement. Without one, you can't bid on these projects.

LEED v4.1 credit

Material Ingredient Reporting credits require manufacturer EPDs. Architects specifying green buildings increasingly mandate them.

Specifier preference

Major construction firms are implementing embodied carbon targets. An EPD showing a low GWP is a competitive differentiator.

Key insight

Corrugated board is the most recyclable packaging; glass has the highest mass-based GWP but long reuse cycles can offset this.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EPD and why do I need one?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document reporting the environmental impacts of your product, primarily carbon (GWP). They are increasingly required for public procurement, LEED v4.1 compliance, and Buy Clean legislation in multiple US states.

How accurate is this calculator?

The calculator uses published emission factors from ecoinvent v3.12 and industry EPD averages. Results are indicative (±15–25%) — accurate enough for benchmarking and compliance screening but not a substitute for a certified EPD.

How long does it take to generate a full EPD?

Most EPDs complete in 10–30 minutes once your BOM is uploaded. The AI handles material matching, impact calculation, and PDF generation. You review and approve each step.

What standards does Terrave follow?

Terrave follows ISO 14025 (EPD programme), EN 15804+A2 (product category rules for construction), ISO 14040/14044 (LCA methodology), and uses ecoinvent v3.12 for background LCA data.
